Want More Effective School Meeting….Leave Baggage at HOME!
by Mary Jacob
It doesn’t matter if it’s an IEP meeting, parent teacher conference, discipline meeting, etc., the thought of meeting with school personnel is sometimes overwhelming to parents. As parents we sometimes think we want to “just get it over with”, but then we can’t help but to relive every little thing that’s ever happened in the past. Here are some tips on how to make your school meetings more successful.
- Schedule a meeting with the person with whom you have a disagreement. Try to be flexible. Don’t show up unannounced and expect them to be available.
- Remember that proper preparation prevents poor performance. Organize your thoughts. Talk with your spouse, friend, doctor, advocate to clarify your concerns and what you are looking for. Write down the most important tips.
- Plan to bring someone with you if you feel intimidated or need help in getting your point across.
- Unpack your baggage and leave it at home! Don’t use this as an opportunity to raise every problem that’s ever happened in your child’s education.
- Even if it requires practice, leave your emotions at the door. Don’t lose your temper!
- Expect respect - but give it too. Be an active listener.
- Share your concerns as politely and clearly as you can. Present what you would like to change, and how you can help that change happen.
- If the meeting is unsuccessful, request a meeting with that person’s supervisor.
- Be prepared to put your concerns in writing and go up the chain of command.
